Fishing innovation runs deep in Japan, where anglers are constantly pushing the limits of creativity. On a recent trip overseas, we discovered one of the wildest rigs we’ve ever seen: the Mouse Trap Rig.

At first glance, it looks like something straight out of a cartoon—a floating mouse skittering across the surface with a small lure trailing behind it. The idea is simple but genius: the floating mouse attracts attention as prey, while the trailing lure seals the deal and tempts fish into striking. It’s quirky, clever, and very Japanese in its design philosophy—taking something ordinary and turning it into a highly effective fishing tool.

We brought this unique rig back with us to test on American beaches. Does it have the same magic here as it does in Japan? That’s what we’re here to find out.
